I didn’t stay up watching Andy as he slept. My internal clock was used to the wonky hours I kept, but it had been a long time since I closed my eyes around the time my alarm normally went off to wake me. And being a parent, I wasn’t able to sleep much past dawn. I tried getting out of the bed to relieve my bladder and start a pot of coffee, but Andy wrapped himself around me like an octopus, adhering his body to my side. Surrendering, I grabbed the book I’d been meaning to read for the past month off the nightstand and flipped on the light. He snuffled in his sleep then buried his face in my arm pit.

By eight, I couldn’t take it any longer. If I didn’t make a trip across the hall soon, I was going to be in trouble. I pried Andy’s arm off my chest and slid out. He grunted. I bent down to kiss him gently. “I’m not going anywhere. Need to use the bathroom and get some coffee.”

“Hurry back.” His words were sleep-slurred as he rolled onto his stomach, hugging my pillow tightly. And he was out again. I envied his ability to barely stir and fall right back to sleep. Once my eyes were open, it was time to start my day whether I liked it or not.

While the coffee brewed, I rummaged through the fridge in search of something simple for breakfast. Today should’ve been my shopping day, but who knew if that would happen. No, it had to happen. Gabriel was officially on his winter break from school as of yesterday, which meant he’d be eating me out of house and home for the next week and a half.

Remember your priorities. I scolded myself.

I tossed the last few slices of bread in the toaster and cleaned some fruit. It wasn’t much, but it would be enough so we could lie in bed talking about what both of us ideally wanted in a partner to see if our desires meshed as well as I thought they might.

When I got back to the bedroom, Andy was sitting up, eyes still puffy, face still creased from the sheets. He sat up straighter when our eyes locked, and he smiled. He had an innocently wicked smile with just the hint of a dimple on the left side of his mouth. I placed our breakfast on the nightstand and bent down to kiss him. He pulled back.

“What’s wrong?” I dropped my hand to his shoulder.

“Morning breath.”

“Little One, if we keep going, do you really think we’re both going to get up and brush our teeth before a good morning kiss?” He shook his head. “That’s right because that’d also make it a lot harder for me to roll over and wake you up by kissing my way down your entire body.”

To prove my point, I traced a finger down the side of his neck and down his bare sternum. I felt his muscles tense as I reached his navel, and I pulled my hand away.
